VULCAN
The life story of the Roman god of fire, smiths and volcanoes is a tragedy. After his birth, his mother deemed him so ugly that she threw him off the Olympus. When he finally returned to the mountain, he got to marry Venus. Venus cheated on him with his brother Mars. That’s sad, isn’t it? Well, the Romans did not pity him. Vulcan was mostly seen as destructive. To make sure that he would not burn them, the Romans organised Vulcanalia: a festival with loads of bonfires. If you want to celebrate with them, you’re too late. The festival was always held on the 23rd of August.
